Tasmania: Bruny Island

We took a tiny ferry out to Bruny Island off the coast of Tasmania for the day and had the best time!

First stop, the distillery. Jeremy had some samples and the kids played. Everly found my little ponies to play with and at the end of the day declared this was her favorite stop.

Bruny Island was absolutely gorgeous. It takes about an hour and a half to go from top to bottom so we spent one very long and full day exploring every nook and cranny.
Most of the roads we went on around the island were dirt roads.

One of our stops - The Cheesery. My favorite! We had a delicious lunch and the kids ran around the decks in the woods where the tables are and explored.
Ireland slept through lunch. :)

Cape Bruny Lighthouse! Absolutely picturesque - as was the whole island.

Jeremy, Parker and Everly went on a tour of the lighthouse and learned a ton.

These lenses around the top of the lighthouse that project the lanterns are so intense that if they are not covered they will start a bush fire. In fact, the woman who sewed these curtains came to check on them because the curtains because in another lighthouse there was a tiny gap in the corner of one and it was just enough that it started a fire and all of the curtains burned up!

The view from Cape Bruny.

This phone is from the 1800's and it is still the only communication they use from the lighthouse to the caretakers house today!

Another pit stop at the berry farm for homemade icecream and a beach walk!

We headed to "The Neck" towards the end of the day - a place on the island where Bruny gets so small that it is barely wide enough for a road, a bit of bushland and long beaches on either side. With a hill on one end and 238 steps leading to a 360 degree view.
So up we went! And the view was gorgeous.

Ireland insisted on climbing the entire way down by herself. And that made her feel quite proud.

We drove straight from The Neck back to the 6pm ferry to find that they weren't running that ferry! So we waited around for the very last ferry at 7:15pm and made plans for what we would have done if we missed that one and had to spend the night on Bruny. :)
