Torquay Surf Club

There are days that sneak up on you as one of your favorite days - a memory maker for your lifetime - and this day was one of those. Evie has been wanting to take surf lessons since we started planning this trip. We decided that this world famous surfing town of Torquay was the perfect place to start. We started off early in the morning with the sun coming up. The kids were nervous and it was a little chilly.

Listening to the basics of getting started.

Parks was persevering. Evie could pop right up. Parks found his passion and never gave up, despite some big tumbles and Evie never skipped a beat after getting tossed in some huge waves!

Parker finding his groove!

Evie getting started on a wave by herself! That's a big deal for this little peanut!

Evie took a quick break when she got pretty cold. It's hard to find a wetsuit that fits our lanky girlie.

This boy was so proud of himself and so are we!

One of my faves. These two were quite the pair.

I hope this shows how hard the surf was! The waves were 4-5 feet and coming down pretty hard. The kids never even thought twice!
Showing off some of the big waves.

So, when your kids declare after a two hour lesson that they have found their new sport and BEG to surf for the rest of the day, we took a quick breakfast break and then rented suits and boards for the rest of the day. I knew I had some true surfers on our hands when they walked their boards "Hawaii style" all the way back off the beach and through town and then back through town, down the bluff and onto the beach again.
After we rented the boards for the rest of the day, Parker proceeded to surf for the next 4 hours straight. He's had a rash, banged up ankles and cuts and bruises on his hands to prove it!

Parks completely mastered his surfing by the end of the day and could ride a wave all the way into the beach!

Ireland proved herself to be the perfect baby yet again. We woke her up 2 hours early and she giggled her way through the morning lesson and then she sang herself to sleep at the beach in the afternoon and napped with me for an hour. Then, even on a tiny nap she giggled and sang her way through the evening!
Torquay Beach with a couple thousand people! It was actually pretty fun to spend the day with all these fellow beach goers - the day felt so celebratory. And it was fun to watch how they play in the water. There were also helicopters flying overhead all day keeping an eye on the shark situation after they saw 32 sharks between this beach and the several down the road!
Parks refused to stop surfing so Jeremy finally went to the foreshore cafe and enticed Parks out by waving a slushy from the shoreline!

Evie decided she prefers boogie boarding because "I don't have to stand up!"

I tried to take a picture of Ireland to show how much sand is covering her face and hair! She rolled in a wave (not hilarious to her) and was covered in a thin layer of sand from head to toe. This was three days ago now and I'm still cleaning sand out of her ears!
